Paul Gravett hosts a international panel on the virtual takeover of European and American comics by an art,
storytelling and format approach which takes the medium back into the mainstream. Surprise guests from the US and
Japan are promised.

creatives, expanding the medium.

2.30 STEVEN APPLEBY – FROM SELF-PUBLISHING TO THE SMALL SCREEN
One of the industry’s success stories, Steven Appleby has gone from self-publishing, through experiments with
animation, creating Captain Star for the NME, developing and funding the TV series, writing and making the show. He’s
also got a few stories to tell about how one’s career is completely at the mercy of new editors! Tips and hints for all!

Liam Sharp has gathered a cutting-edge crew for his Event Horizon, with the second issue launching this weekend.
Come and hear how a leading artist made the jump into publishing and attracted some of the industry’s top names to

4.30 STYLE & STORYTELLING IN THE TALE OF ONE BAD RAT
Slide show and talk by Bryan Talbot. This interesting and informative talk takes you behind the stylistic decisions
involved in the creation of a graphic novel and the underlying storytelling techniques that inform the reading
experience. Beginning with a quick tour of some of his early work, pointing out the use of different styles to project
different atmospheres, Bryan proceeds to discuss the use of composition, eye level, colour and character charisma in
his multi-award winning graphic novel.

Graham Kibble-White, author of The Ultimate Book of British Comics, is chairing a star-studded panel looking at the
highs and lows of British humour and adventure comics. Where did they all go? Will Albion and Jack Staff spearhead a
revival? Come along and find out! Guests include the legendary John M Burns (Modesty Blaise, Wrath of the Gods)
and Bill Titcombe, the artist who gave birth to Buster in May 1960, and has drawn just about every humour character
since, from Bewitched to My Favourite Martian and Tom & Jerry to Scooby Doo.

and the excellent ‘Hypotheticals’ live events), Pat Sullivan (the main man on this side of the ocean for Diamond Comics
Distributors) Tony Lee (writer of The Gloom, Midnight Kiss and Shadowmancer for Markosia), Daley Osiyemi (co-
creator of Brodie's Law) and more.

4.00 BRYAN TALBOT: LUTHER ARKWRIGHT AND BEYOND
Bryan reveals the legacy of Luther Arkwright; created in 1978 and collected in 1982 as, alongside Raymond Briggs'
When The Wind Blows, the first British Graphic Novel. The 284 page tome, Heart of Empire, was an epic sequel and
now Bryan is hard at work on his latest tour de force, Alice in Sunderland.
