General Information
Comic Expo 2005 is keen to cultivate new talent and to involve the Brighton community in the
event as much as possible. Brighton and Hove has a very strong student presence, with two
Universities and City College Brighton as well as numerous independent colleges and
language schools.

City College is one of Comic Expo's official sponsors. Founded over 100 years ago, City
College Brighton and Hove has become an international centre of excellence. Every year
over 2000 full-time students and 13,000 part-time students as well as many international
and European students choose City College as their educational provider. Offering over 650
courses from basic level to pre-University level, City College is working with its partners to
develop the workforce of the future. Click onto
www.ccb.ac.uk for further information.

The college was recently awarded a CoVE (Centre of Vocational Excellence) in Digital
Design, its third such award in two years.

Working with Quality Communications, the college's Art and Design students have created a
full-colour comic for Comic Expo Brighton 2005. With tutorials from Comic Expo's experts,
students have learned how to create a comic which incorporates their own original
interpretations for inclusion in the Ace Comics.

With a 20,000 print-run and to be distributed around Brighton & Hove in October and early
November, the comic will promote the Comic Expo event. Click on a page to enlarge and

LUCY ANSTEY (Creator: BALLOONS)
I am from a small village in West Sussex and having just finished my
Art Foundation at City College Brighton, I will be moving to
Bournemouth in September to begin a BA (Hons) degree in
Illustration. Artists such as David Shrigly, Simone Lid and Jeffrey
Brown inspire work as well as people I have met.
The work I produced for this magazine is unlike my other illustrations.
I usually work with dip pen and Indian ink to create fast, single line
drawings that have a naive quality to them.
PAULA CRANE (Creator: HEARTS RULE)
I’m from Haywards Heath in Sussex and have just finished my
Foundation Year of Art in City College Brighton and Hove. I am now
going on to University College Falmouth in Cornwall to study
illustration.
I hope to work as a freelance illustrator and hopefully find time to
follow my other passion, music.
ERIN FLANAGAN (Creator: IT...)
...lives in Lewes, where they generally turn a blind eye to that sort of
thing. She is currently in quarantine at Brighton University, where she
is studying illustration. She is probably destined to be a cartoonist of
some sort, as she already owns a worrying number of comics in
see-through plastic bags and can talk about supervillains for hours
on end.
There is as yet no known cure for Erin Flanagan.
KYLIE LEWIS (Creator: BIRD BRAIN)
During my fantastic time in Brighton doing my Foundation, I became
strangely fascinated and slightly grossed out by the mangy street
pigeons, which have inspired me to the end! They appear in a lot of
my work!
Next year I am studying graphics at Saint Martins in London. After this
I hope to get into “the ad game” and try to take over the world.
POLLY SPENCER (Creator: SOMETIMES...)
My name is Polly Spencer, and I have lived in Brighton for six years. I
have been going to City College Brighton & Hove doing the Art
Foundation course for the past year and am now going on to study
illustration at Middlesex University.
SARAH TARAT-JONES (Creator: ONE
BRIGHTON BUILDING... MANY BRIGHTON
LIVES)
Once upon a time, there lived a girl called Sarah Tarat-Jones. For
seven years she was imprisoned in a tower on a hill, but she
escaped and spent a year roaming the city with a troupe of artisans.
She plans to travel afar to study the written world, and hopefully will
live happily ever after as a writer and illustrator of stories. But we
shall see what we shall see.
LOUISE HARMAN (Creator: MARBO AND
THE FLYING PIXIE WASHERS)
I have Just Finished my Art Foundation course at City College
Brighton and Hove, Where I have studied Graphics and Illustration.
Next year I am taking a gap year to travel with my friends to Russia,
Japan and Thailand, where I will take with me a number of
sketchbooks and work journals.
In September 2006 I will be Starting University at the Kent Institute of
Art and Design, doing a BA in Illustration.
RACHINTA PLATTS (Creator: RED THREAD
SOULMATES)
I was kidnapped at the age of three and then raised by Tibetan
monks and later became Queen of the Oompa Loompas
somewhere in India. Sounds exciting, but the truth is more mundane.
I was born in France, raised in Indonesia and then the Isle of Wight.
After studying illustration at Brighton & Hove City College, I am taking
Graphic Design BA(hons) in Norwich School of Art and Design.  I’m
keeping an open mind about career.  A bit of this and a bit of that I
suppose, but I hope to be famous for my own work one day.
JOLEEN WARING (Creator: THE QUEEN
OF SLAUGHTERING PLACES)
I live in Brighton in an area with a bad reputation, Moulsecoomb. I
have just finished my foundation studies in Art and Design at City
College. I am continuing my studies at Kingston University in
London, where I will be doing BA in Illustration and Animation. If I
haven’t won the lottery by the time I am 21, I think I’ll become a
teacher of illustration instead.
BEN WILLIAMS (Creator: HIGH IN THE
CITY)
My name is Ben, I’m from Shoreham. I hope to go to university
and become an animator, but having said that if it doesn’t work
out I’d like to become a pirate – old skool, mind you. I’d sail
around in my big boat swashbuckling with other pirates and
pillaging cruise liners. Ahh, if only...
